Do you ever watch those (mostly teenage) tv shows where, in ever episode, there is an event or party of some sort? And you’re like, “do these people ever work or go to school?” Literally, a party every night! Well, if you live in Las Vegas, and you are that connected person- this is your life! I am NOT one of those people. Yes, I got out with friends and every now and again I’ll be invited to an opening or a charity mixer or whatnot but otherwise, I’m home watching Scandal on Thursday night with the rest of America.
Enter, St. Jude Children’s Hospital. What an amazingly wonderful institution. Is there a cause more deserving? St. Jude makes it possible for children with Cancer to be treated and never EVER receive a bill. Everything from food to travel to lodging and of course, treatment, is covered. The best part is the childhood Cancer survival rate is currently at 80% thanks to research and work done at St. Jude.
I was lucky enough to serve on the fundraising committee for the Las Vegas St. Jude’s annual black-tie gala at the Wynn hotel & casino this past Saturday. While I do enjoy the idea of dressing up for a formal function, I’m at a total loss when it comes to picking a dress. Do I buy one and pay at least $300+ for a formal gown that I’ll probably only wear once? Hell no. I did the unthinkable. I left it to chance. I rented a dress from Rent The Runway.
The Rent The Runway process is simple. Go to their website (they also have a few store locations), enter your criteria (dress type, size, date needed, etc…) and the dresses available will be filtered. I chose (what I thought) the perfect dress. I read all the reviews of the dresses I liked to especially see how the length of these dresses measured up. I’m only 5’3.5″ (yes, that half inch counts) so most dresses are way too long on me. Since you cannot alter the dresses you rent, you need to do your homework. When I found the dress I wanted, they were running a special: Rent 1, get 2 free. So, I rented 1, got a backup size (2) and then another alternative dress (3). Total was $180 (with shipping, etc…) for a 4-day rental. Thank goodness I got that backup size smaller, because the dress ran large and the smaller of the 2 fit like a glove, as you can see. If I had purchased the dress in a store, it would have been $695, so for $150, it’s worth it! For returns, you simply put everything back into the zip-up back and insert the return label, provided on the front for UPS. Since we have a store in Vegas, I was able to drop it off in person. I will definitely use Rent The Runway again for the next black-tie event and cross my fingers that it works just as smoothly the 2nd time around.
At the event, my company, 40Nine, gave away a fun $49 wristwatch to each attendee of the gala! Local celebrity News 3 couple, Dana and Kim Wagner (the emcees for the evening) were kind enough to show off their watches for the camera. Also in attendance was Fox 5 news personality, Jason Feinberg, also modeling his 40Nine watch.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised that night and I’m so proud to have been a part of it.
